AmaZulu favourites to land out of contract Maritzburg striker

SABC Sport has established AmaZulu are favourites to sign striker Amadou Soukouna, whose contract with crosstown rivals Maritzburg United will expire at the end of the season on 30 June.

It’s understood Usuthu have put in some leg work and have all but agreed terms with the French-born forward on a pre-contract.

This means if all the finer details are ironed out Soukouna will be joining AmaZulu effectively from 1 July when the transfer window opens.

According to information gathered by the public broadcaster’s sport desk, Maritzburg have been focused on surviving relegation before engaging players that are soon-to-be out of contract.

The Team of Choice have two DStv Premiership games to save their topflight status when they face Stellenbosch FC on Saturday and champions Mamelodi Sundowns three days later.

It’s understood Soukouna did not have an option on his contract and Maritzburg are then set to lose him on a free transfer to their KwaZulu-Natal rivals.

The 30-year-old joined the team from the Midlands two seasons ago from the Israeli second tier and scored three goals from 22 appearances.

His second season has been a challenging one for the club, but Sokouna’s numbers have improved – seven goals from 24 matches, his latest coming in their previous away league clash against Marumo Gallants.

Soukouna thought he’s bagged the winning goal when he converted from the penalty spot to give Maritzburg the lead, but the hosts equalised with virtually the last kick of the match to force the encounter into a stalemate.

It’s now expected that he will play his last game for the Team of Choice on Tuesday before preparing to move across to Usuthu.
