The public broadcaster earlier reported Usuthu were adding the experienced centre back to their squad on the back of beating Kaizer Chiefs and SuperSport United to acquiring the services of young midfielder Rowan Human.
Xulu spent the past year in Azerbaijan playing for Turan Tovuz, but with his contract ending the defender was looking for a fresh chapter.
SuperSport CEO Stan Matthews had initially confirmed the Tshwane outfit had pulled out of the race, leaving AmaZulu favourites for his signature.
“We haven’t had a chance to look at him really and we don’t know what his situation is or if he’s got other offers lined-up. He is a player we were prepared to have a look at, but we have looked at five centre backs,” Matthews explained.
“It’s a position we are looking to boost, but we have a guy here who is South African and played in Cyprus.”
Despite Matthews' comments, the club, as the public broadcaster now understands, Matsatsantsa have made a u-turn in signing the defender.
Xulu was expected to be part of the AmaZulu squad in this weekend’s Mangosuthu Cup in Ulundi, where coach Pablo Franco Martin could give him some minutes. However, he trained with SuperSport on Thursday morning, where he is now set to sign, instead.
Xulu, who has played for Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs and Maritzburg United in the Premier Soccer League, wants regular game time to be able to make the Bafana Bafana squad for the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast next year.
The centre back had two offers but is believed to have turned down AmaZulu.
