Bafana Bafana take control of World Cup qualifying group after win against Benin

Bafana Bafana went five points clear of their World Cup qualifying group after a comfortable 2-0 victory against Benin at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium in Ivory Coast on Tuesday.

Lyle Foster and Jayden Adams both found the back of the net in the second half to secure the victory that takes Hugo Broos' charges up to 13 points from six matches.

Rwanda and Benin sit joint second in Group C on eight points while Nigeria are on seven points after the Super Eagles conceded a last-minute goal to draw 1-1 at home against Zimbabwe.

Bafana started the contest on the front foot but failed to make their initial dominance count as the only shot in anger came from right-back Khuliso Mudau, who saw his effort comfortably saved.

Benin came close to finding the opener but defender Junior Olaitan's header was easily saved by goalkeeper and South Africa captain Ronwen Williams.

The second half started in the same fashion with Bafana controlling proceedings and the deadlock was broken in the 53rd minute when Fawaaz Basadien was in space down the left and sent in a low cross to Foster who squeezed his effort over the goal-line.

The game was sealed with six minutes of regulation remaining when two substitutes combined from a set-piece to make the score 2-0.

Oswin Appollis played a delightful free-kick into the box and Adams rose to head home his second goal in two matches to ensure South Africa take maximum points back home.

With only one automatic place securing a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Bafana now sit in pole position to take their place at the global tournament with four matches in the group still remaining.
