Andre Arendse calls for accountability over Bafana Bafana blunder

Bafana Bafana legend Andre Arendse believes those responsible for a possible points deduction in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Africa qualifiers should be held to account for their mishap.

Arendse, who was last week appointed SuperSport United head coach following Gavin Hunt’s sacking, attended the national team watch party for their 2-0 win over Benin last night, hosted by new sponsors Honor.

Bafana are at risk of losing three points after fielding Teboho Mokoena, who was meant to serve a one-match suspension, during their 2-0 win over Lesotho last Friday, and Arendse has called for swift action against the guilty parties.

"There has to be accountability. When mistakes are made, there has to be accountability, and if we can assume that, as custodians of the game, when we're working at a high level like with the national team, then there has to be accountability for actions," said Arendse.

"When you're on a critical journey like this, every single person who's part of a setup, part of the process, must have accountability for their actions – that's a non-negotiable.

"Because the journey gets so hectic and so challenging when just one person or something slips up, it can negatively affect the team."

Despite the controversy surrounding the blunder, Arendse was delighted with how the team showed up for their crunch clash with Benin, which Mokoena sat out of.

"But nothing can take away from what happened in the game today, the positive aspect of it, the win we bring home, the three points, and it just sets up nicely on this road for qualification," he noted.

"For me, when I look at it overall at the moment, the focus that the team played with tonight was a plus, in the midst of all the negativity around what happened in the previous game, so I was very happy to see that."
