Bayer Leverkusen dismiss Florian Wirtz extension reports

Bayer Leverkusen have been making headlines not only for their impressive on-pitch performances but also for the swirling rumors around star player Florian Wirtz.

On Monday, Kicker magazine sparked a flurry of speculation by reporting that Wirtz had secured a contract extension with the club, extending his stay beyond 2027.

However, Bayer Leverkusen have quickly clarified the situation in a statement, emphasizing their close relationship with Wirtz and his family but confirming no agreement had been reached yet.

"Bayer 04 has enjoyed a very trusting and close relationship with Florian Wirtz and his family for many years. Contractual matters will continue to be discussed exclusively between the Bayer 04 management and the Wirtz family," the club stated, adding that they would not comment further on the matter until changes to the current contract are finalized.

On the pitch, Leverkusen have been in scintillating form, securing their seventh consecutive victory with a 2-0 win against Augsburg.

This streak has not only delighted fans but also put considerable pressure on league leaders Bayern Munich, who now only lead by four points following their unexpected loss to Mainz.

Simon Rolfes, the managing director for sport at Bayer Leverkusen, was visibly pleased with the team's performance. "We concentrated on our passing and were in control of the game. We also had the feel for the right ball at the right time. It was a mature, grown-up performance," he told Sky Germany post-match.

Rolfes subtly acknowledged the pressure this places on other teams, saying, "What we're working towards is showing our strength every three days. That puts pressure on the other clubs, in whatever form. Then they might drop points."

As Leverkusen enjoy this run of form, the focus on Wirtz's future remains high.
