Betway Premiership wrap: Gallants stun CT City with early strike in Cape Town thriller

In a tense Betway Premiership clash at Athlone Stadium on Saturday, Marumo Gallants edged out Cape Town City 1-0 in a match defined by a lightning-fast goal and dogged defending.

The action ignited just seven minutes in when Gaba Mhango fired a left-footed rocket from the heart of the box, burying it in the bottom right corner past a helpless City keeper.

Cape Town City controlled the ball for much of the first half, with Jaedin Rhodes, Amadou Soukouna, Nathan Idumba, and Aprocius Petru all carving out chances.

But Gallants' goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi stood tall, thwarting every effort with sharp saves, while City's finishing let them down.

The second half followed a similar script. City pushed forward, but Gallants' backline held firm with timely interceptions and blocked shots.

Akpeyi's heroics ensured a clean sheet, frustrating the home fans.

The 1-0 victory hoisted Marumo Gallants to 13th in the Betway Premiership standings with 22 points from 22 matches, while Cape Town City slipped to 11th, sitting on 23 points from 23 games.

For Gallants, it was a gritty triumph; for City, a missed opportunity on home soil.

Magesi continue survival push with vital win against Arrows

Magesi FC continue to show great fight in their survival battle after grinding out a 1-0 victory against Golden Arrows at the Seshego Stadium on Saturday.

The only goal of the game was scored by Lehlegonolo Mokone just before the half hour mark and was enough to give the home side a vital win in their relegation fight.

Arrows pressed in the second half and really pinned Magesi back and came close to the equaliser in the closing stages but home defender Delano Abrahams made a brilliant last-ditch tackle.

Magesi looked dead and buried and certain for a return to the lower league a few weeks ago but have now won three out of their last five matches under head coach Owen Da Gama to give themselves a real opportunity to remain in the top-flight.

The victory on Saturday moves the Limpopo outfit up to 23 points after the same amount of matches, two clear of the relegation play-off place.

It is really a dog fight at the bottom of the standings with Cape Town City on the same amount of points as Magesi while Chippa United and Marumo Gallants are one behind while Richards Bay and SuperSport are a further two points behind.

Chippa United end winless run with victory over Polokwane City

Chippa United ended their five-match winless streak in the Betway Premiership with a 2-0 victory over Polokwane City at Buffalo City Stadium on Saturday evening.

The first half was quiet, with Polokwane City managing a single shot on target, while Chippa United failed to trouble opposition goalkeeper Brian Bwire.

However, the game came to life shortly after the break when Azola Ntsabo opened the scoring in the 49th minute.

His bouncing free kick initially caused confusion, leading to a brief discussion among the match officials before the goal was confirmed.

Polokwane City had a golden opportunity to equalise late in the match when Chippa goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali was penalised for time-wasting, conceding an indirect free kick inside his own box.

However, Oswin Appollis' shot was saved by Nwabali, and Ndamulelo Maphangule failed to convert the rebound.

Chippa sealed the win in the 86th minute in bizarre fashion when a long goal kick from Nwabali was misjudged by Polokwane defender Nikani, who inadvertently sent the ball past Bwire for an own goal.
