Bongeka Gamede, Nox Cesane issue UWC rallying cry

Former University of the Western Cape duo Bongeka Gamede and Noxolo Cesane have rallied their ex-teammates to bounce back in the CAF Women’s Champions League.

The pair was part of the squad that helped the Capetonians win gold in the COSAFA qualifying tournament in Malawi earlier this year, prior to their moves to Europe and the Middle East respectively.

UWC, who are making their debut in the continental showpiece, got their campaign off to a negative start with a 2-0 loss to TP Mazembe of DR Congo on Saturday, and Gamede says the second match will be a real test for them as points are paramount.

“I think it wasn’t an easy game. In fact, I don’t think there are easy games at this level, especially when you play outside the country,” said the former vice-captain.

“But I think they should keep in mind that you lose some and you win some. The previous game should not stop them from fighting even harder.

“And they must remember that champions are not the ones who always win, but the ones who go out there and try, and when they fail, they try even harder the next time.

“So, without doubt, this will be a big test for them, but I know they are really up for it. Keep your heads up uDubs, many are proud of the efforts you have put in.”

Cesane, who was the first to leave the club, has urged her former teammates not to settle for less.

“Football is a game of moments. They have worked hard to be there, and the time has finally come, and now is their moment to shine,” she added.

“They must also remember that nothing comes easy in life, and everything is in their hearts and minds. They shouldn’t settle for less, but must just do their best and continue working together as a team, and be proud of their work in the process.

“I just want to wish them all the best, I have confidence they can bounce back. Kuboo bushies."
