Bradley Carnell excited about new MLS coaching position

Former Bafana Bafana defender Bradley Carnell is excited about his new project in the USA after he was appointed head coach of Philadelphia Union in the Major League Soccer.

The South African was presented to the media on Thursday upon putting pen to paper on a two-year contract.

The former Bidvest Wits and Kaizer Chiefs full-back is no stranger to the MLS, having enjoyed previous stints with New York Red Bulls and St Louis City SC, and is relishing his new home in Philly.

"I'd like to thank the ownership group – Jay [Sugarman], Richie [Graham], and Richard [Leibovitch], as well as Ernst [Tanner, sporting director] for the faith and confidence put in me to move the Union forward here in 2025 and beyond," said Carnell.

"This place is no doubt a great foundation that has been laid over the last 10-plus years, it's an exciting and wonderful project to be part of, and a wonderful team to be part of.

"I'm looking forward to getting back to the ways that defines the development and philosophy of this club, the players, the community.

"I'm not just looking ahead but also back at certain points to file on the philosophy again and make us something different, edgy, and difficult to play against – this is something that's a part of me, what you see is what you get.

"It's in my DNA as a player and coach, and I've had a history of doing that at all the stations I've been at, whether as a player or a coach.

"So it's an exciting project and I'm looking forward to connecting with the Sons of Ben, the supporter group, and being part of a Philly sports team is something special.

"There's something special when you speak about the Major Leagues and Philadelphia – there's always a grittiness, toughness and an edge that each team plays with, and I'm excited to be part of that."
