Royal AM striker now a free agent, set to join rivals

SABC Sport can reveal that striker Mxolisi Macuphu has received his clearance from Royal AM and is now working on his next move.

As reported by the public broadcaster recently and then later confirmed by the KwaZulu-Natal outfit, the club has been placed under curatorship by the South African Revenue Services [SARS] over a R40-million tax debt linked to Shauwn Mkhize, who is the president of the club.

With Royal AM troubled and delaying salaries for November and December, a few players have requested to leave in order to look for employment elsewhere during the January registration window.

The monies were eventually paid with the players returning to training.

Although Macupu can join a club of his choice at any point now that he is a free agent this month, it’s understood the forward has been offered to crosstown rivals Richards Bay as an option.

The Natal Rich Boys are considered relegation candidates in the Betway Premiership due to being just three points behind the two bottom sides – Magesi FC and Royal AM – after 13 matches.

Macupu has been presented by his camp as an experienced striker who can help get the club out of trouble by scoring goals for the side led by coach Ronnie Gabriel, who took over from Brandon Truter late last year.

The 35-year-old forward is well-travelled having been on the books of SuperSport United, TS Galaxy, Chippa United and Bidvest Wits to name a few.

Macupu has a record of 35 goals in 228 matches in the topflight and is now a free agent looking for a new club.

Richards Bay are favourites to land his services.
