Imminent deal for ex-junior international Darren Johnson at Sekhukhune

Sekhukhune United could add former youth international goalkeeper Darren Johnson to their squad before the end of the season, SABC Sport understands.

The 26-year-old is a free agent and can join any club of his choice outside the transfer window and already spent “several weeks” at Babina Noko being assessed by coach Brandon Truter and his technical team.

Johnson’s previous club was Motsepe Foundation Championship outfit University of Pretoria in the second tier, but a move to Sekhukhune would be a major step up for a player who is a product of the famous Ajax Cape Town academy.

Sekhukhune have used two keepers this season in Toaster Nsabata and Ali Sangare, the latter managing more games so far this season.

Nsabata has conceded eight goals in 10 matches and kept three clean sheets, while Sangare, signed at the beginning of the campaign, has 14 games, 12 goals conceded and seven clean sheets under his belt.

But Johnson would present Truter, whose side face Golden Arrows in a DStv Premiership clash at 3pm this afternoon, with an alternative for the six games of the season.

According to information gathered by the public broadcaster’s sport desk, talks are at an advanced stage for Johnson to put pen to paper although the finer details haven’t been completely ironed out.

His agent confirmed the discussions.

“It is true that Darren has been training at Sekhukhune for several weeks now and I have only heard good reports from all technical staff and players. We are looking forward to the outcome and hopeful it’s positive,” explained Sean Roberts.
