The Reds have set their sights on revamping their midfield this summer, as it was a problematic area that hindered their performance last season. The club have already bid farewell to Arthur Melo, Leighton Clarkson, Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and James Milner, while welcoming newcomers Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai, acquired for £35 million and £60 million respectively.
Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano revealed that Liverpool are seeking another midfield addition at Anfield. While Gabri Veiga from Celta Vigo were previously linked, the club are now inclined towards a more defensive-minded player.
Among the candidates under consideration are Manu Kone, Khephren Thuram, and 19-year-old Romeo Lavia, who impressed during his breakthrough season at Southampton. Despite the team's relegation, Lavia stood out in the engine room and garnered attention from several top clubs.
Both Arsenal and Chelsea have shown interest in Lavia, with Romano confirming the Gunners' persistent interest even after their pursuit of Declan Rice. Meanwhile, The Athletic's Jacob Tanswell asserted that Chelsea would be contenders in the race as well.
However, talkSPORT reported that Liverpool are poised to take the lead by submitting an official bid promptly. This move has put them ahead of Arsenal and Chelsea in the pursuit of Lavia's signature.
Southampton are said to be seeking a bid of £50 million for the young sensation, a figure also confirmed by Romano. Although Liverpool's initial offer remains undisclosed, they are eager to secure Lavia's services.
It's worth noting that Lavia's former club, Manchester City, included a buy-back clause in his Southampton deal, which only becomes active in 2024. However, this clause would be voided if he signs with another club this summer.
Jacob Tanswell, who specializes in Southampton for The Athletic, believes Liverpool are the most likely destination for Lavia due to Jurgen Klopp's influence and the club's background work on the player.
With Liverpool's opening bid poised to shake up the race for Lavia, the Reds seem confident in their pursuit of the talented midfielder. The spotlight now shifts to Southampton, who must decide whether to part ways with their rising star.
