The 28-year-old insisted after picking up his Man of the Match award against Angola that this act of selflessness was again proof of the harmony in the squad.
Simon and his teammates now wait to see which side they face on Wednesday between Cape Verde and Bafana Bafana.
"I feel really happy, the most important thing is the victory. You can be the Man of the Match and you lose. So, I'm really happy about the victory, most importantly. What was going through my mind was that I pass the ball to Victor [Osimhen], Ademola or I score but at the moment we don't need to be selfish, we just need to feed them and they score, I'm really happy he utilised the chances," Simon said.
The narrow win was yet another game where key striker Victor Osimhen was unable to get his name on the score sheet, although his overall contribution to the team continues to stand out.
Simon believes the Napoli striker would prefer victory over personal glory.
"The mood is very good in camp - we don't even think about this and I believe he doesn't even think about scoring. He thinks about victory, if he has the opportunity, he will score but if he has the opportunity to just give the pass but the important thing, I can say is we just want to win. We don't care who scores or who doesn't score," Simon added.
What’s also quickly becoming a strength for Nigeria is their defence – the clean sheet against Angola was their fourth in five matches at the AFCON.
Defender Semi Ajayi says this is what you need to win titles.
"Like I said before if we're gonna win this tournament, we are gonna need a pretty solid defence. So, luckily that continued today [Friday night]. We took our chance, we managed to kick them out. So, we are through to the next round," Ajayi said.
