Baroka, who were dispatched from the Nedbank Cup last 16 by Orlando Pirates on Saturday, are currently eighth on the Championship table, 12 points behind leaders Durban City, after 18 matches this season.
Hlungwani, who recently took the reins following Joel Masutha's abrupt departure for seventh-placed Black Leopards, is bracing himself for what is set to be a battle royal for ascension to the Betway Premiership, after Bakgaga fell short at the play-offs last year.
"There [in the Championship], the teams that are in the top eight all stand a chance of fighting for promotion – there it's in the jungle, and the only survivor in the jungle is still hunting," said Hlungwani.
"So it's about us adopting the right mentality if we want to go to the play-offs or challenge for the league – we have to take one day at a time, one game at a time, and prepare well.
"These kinds of games [against Pirates], they give us that thing of saying where are we in terms of the progress of the club, and I feel like if we can use these experiences into our league, we can do better.
"We still have a chance [at promotion] – the only thing in the promotional league is [that it is] a point-orientated league this one, you need to accumulate points starting from the match we're playing against Durban City.
"I think that one will be a match where we can say, if we are serious about promotion, we must do well and get the points, especially [because] we're playing at home."
