Richmond United coach disappointed for failing to reach HWBSL club target

Richmond United coach Edwin Lisene is disappointed that the team failed to reach its top four target in their 2024 Hollywoodbets Super campaign.

This after the Northern Cape outfit fell short of securing a top eight spot for the first time since the inception of the league in 2019.

The red army wrapped up the current campaign at 10th place on the log behind Royal AM Ladies.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Lisene says that the team started to lose its momentum in the second quarter of the league, and is hurt that they never got to bounce back.

“I must admit that things did not go as planned this season. We started well, we were consistent in the top four from the beginning of the season until around May, so that’s where things changed. As a coach I am really disappointed,” said Lisene.

Lisene did admit that this season’s result does put his job under fire.

“Yes, things are not looking good, I doubt you will see me with the team next season. But I can’t talk much about that. A lot will be revealed soon,” added Lisene.

Lisene’s passion for women’s football goes a long way, having enjoyed an illustrious career as a women’s football coach spanning over three decades, with his first coaching job at Bloemfontein Celtic Ladies in the 80s.

He shared more regarding his commitment to the women’s game.

“I love women’s football, this dates from way back. I always make sure I have a good relationship with my players. I play a father figure role - because I know they look up to me. I feel sad that we didn’t get to live up to expectations this season,” he expressed.

The 51-year-old further shares insights on what can help the team to perform better next season.

“The team has faced so many challenges behind the scenes. It will be important to sort those issues heading into the new season. It is a matter of going back to the drawing board and unpack what went wrong and try to rectify all those mistakes. I mean the league is becoming tougher every season and the team will have to keep up,” he concluded.
