Simo Dladla excited by CAF Confederation Cup prospects with Durban City

Durban City head coach Simo Dladla is excited at the prospect of possibly qualifying for next season’s CAF Confederation Cup, should his team go all the way in the Nedbank Cup.

City, current log leaders in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, will host Marumo Gallants in the last quarter-final match at Chatsworth Stadium on Sunday.

Dladla, who is one of the few SA coaches who went to Botswana to complete his CAF A license, says the thought of coaching in CAF inter-club competitions excites him.

"I have thought about that but it was just a thought, I don’t know if it will become a reality but I think that adds on the reason why we have to do well in this competition,” Dladla said.

“I think as a coach I'm ready because I went all the way to Botswana to get my A-Licence when we didn't have the course here in South Africa for similar reasons, so that when opportunities like this come, I'll be ready to take them on.

“I think it's not great when coaches qualify for CAF competitions but have to sit with the fans because they don't have a licence. I think that's embarrassing but I think if it happens, then I'll be ready."

As the only lower-division team left in the tournament, City will be looking to pull off an upset against the top-flight side, with Dladla expecting a totally changed Gallants team under their new technical team led by Abdeslam Ouaddou.

"I'm expecting a very different team, they used to focus more on the ball but now their game plan is focused on their physicality. So, I'm expecting a very difficult game but if we plan accordingly with my players and they execute the plan correctly, we will win," he added.
