South Africa friendly was merely a distraction for Namibia - coach

Namibia coach Collin Benjamin admitted their friendly against South Africa helped serve as a temporary distraction from learning their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations fate.

It’s an anxious wait ahead of Tuesday’s AFCON qualifier between Cameroon and Burundi to confirm which two teams from Group C will be part of the tournament in Ivory Coast in four months’ time.

The Brave Warriors, who are top of that group – just one point ahead of both sides, held Bafana Bafana to a goalless draw at Orlando Stadium on Saturday, but the result that matters more is from a fixture they cannot influence at all this coming week.

"You know, luckily we could come here to Orlando Stadium and play, and get our minds off that for a while, so that wait is going to continue from tonight onwards," explained Benjamin.

"But I'm really confident that we will make it, I think if you look at the constellation, it's really – but then again, it's football.

"So what is it that we're going to do? We're going to back on Tuesday, we'll start training because we have to prepare the CHAN [African Nations Championships] team for 22 September, so we'll keep ourselves busy with training and trying to get better."

Namibia have only ever featured in three AFCON tournaments – 1998, 2008 and 2019.

Benjamin says sealing a spot at next year’s edition would be massive as his side only needs a winner in Garoua, where the Indomitable Lions and the Swallows will clash.

"Oh, wow. It's going to be huge. I mean, if you look at our history, we're not as fortunate as our big brothers up here [Bafana] that we can just qualify like that, it's a lot of hard work," he said.

"If you look at the history, we had '98, 2008, 2019, and if we can do it now, basically four years later, it's quite an achievement, especially looking at where we're coming from – two or three years of non-activity in soccer."
