Komphela spent the past three seasons at Mamelodi Sundowns, where he initially served as "senior coach" before a technical team reshuffle in October last year saw his role changed to "first team coach" alongside Rhulani Mokwena as head coach.
He now steps out of the shadows at The Brazilians to take up the lead role at the Dube Birds, who have confirmed Musa Nyatama and Ditheko Mototo as his assistants for the upcoming 2023/24 season.
"We want to take Swallows FC to the next level and we are very excited to have attracted the services of Coach Komphela," read a statement from the club.
"We appreciate the professional manner in which Mamelodi Sundowns FC managed these negotiations.
"Coach Musa Nyatama remains a special pillar of our team and his willingness to learn and work closer with an experienced Coach like Steve Komphela is highly appreciated."
Despite his contrubution to the club's successes over the past three years, during which they won consecutive league titles, the MTN8 and Nedbank Cup, Sundowns realsed a short statement wishing the coach well in his new venture.
"Steve Komphela served Mamelodi Sundowns with loyalty and devotion and will always be a member of the Mamelodi Sundowns Family. We wish him everything of the best," said chairman Tlhopie Motsepe in the media release.
The 56-year-old tactician's last head coach role was with Golden Arrows between 2018 and 2020, before which he led Bloemfontein Celtic, Kaizer Chiefs and Maritzburg United in the domestic Premiership.
He also holds previous coaching experience with Bafana Bafana and the national under-23 side, when he started out his career in the dugout.
