Taking a step back to the Sasol League saved my career – Banyana goalkeeper

Banyana Banyana goalkeeper at the recently ended COSAFA Women’s Championship, Jessica Williams, says she had to go to a lower division to find the drive to play football again.

The Capetonian was on the books of TUT Matsatsantsa Ladies in the Hollywoodbets Super League but things did not go according to plan and she had to return home.

Williams got a new lease of life this season when she joined Badgers FC in the Sasol League. She has already been capped at U17, U20 and Banyana Banyana level but going down a step did not bother her as she found happiness again to play the game she loves.

''I am overwhelmed, also grateful to the people at the club that I went to. At TUT things did not work out for me, obviously people have their own take on it, because people don't know the full story.

Taking a step back actually helped me and kept me sane. I was with the people who  believe in me. Going to Badgers was one of the  best things I could have done for myself, because the environment is healthy and it is inclusive. Credit has to go to the club owner and my teammates, they gave me the boost and the confidence. I was with people who actually believe in me,'' said Williams

Williams was the only player from the Sasol League in the Banyana Banyana squad at the COSAFA Cup, and she ended up being one of the best performers.

She was even named Goalkeeper of the Tournament.

''I do feel good, just the fact that the coach trusted me enough to actually call me up. I am not going to say I am content with my performances,  but I am happy given the fact that I come from a season where I wasn't at the highest level. I am sad that I  conceded  but it is something I continue to work on,'' said Williams.

The Capetonian also spoke about the wonder free kick she scored against Eswatini in a 3-1 win.

The goal went viral, but she says it’s something she has done before.

''It happened at our club matches in the season. It is a thing that I do, as long as I trust myself more - things always go in my favor,'' she expressed.

Williams reflected on the COSAFA Women’s Championship where they faced Zambia in the final, to go down 4-1 on penalties after extra time. Although she was keen on a gold medal, she accepts second place.

SABC Sport has learnt that following her heroics at the COSAFA Women’s Championship, Williams is now on the wanted list of several Hollywoodbets Super League teams, but she still has to apply her mind as to which direction she takes.
