UWC in a historic win in the CAF Women’s Champions League

The University of the Western Cape (UWC) made history when they won their first match in the CAF Women’s Champions League 2024 in Morocco on Tuesday.

The Capetonians registered an all-important 2-0 victory over Senegal’s Aigles de la Medina to boost their chances of a semi-final berth.

With nothing separating the two teams at the break, the students struck twice in the second half.

Molatelo Kobo came off the bench to rewrite the history books with the first-ever goal for UWC in the competition five minutes after the restart before Ntombifikile Ndlovu scored a beauty to make it 2-0 in the 66th minute.

The Senegalese tried to mount a comeback, but it was not to be - giving the South Africans their historic victory in the continental club tournament.

It was an entertaining duel between the two debutants who both came into this encounter at the back of defeats – UWC lost 2-0 to TP Mazembe while Medina were beaten 3-0 by AS FAR.

In the other group match, the hosts collected maximum points when they came back from a goal down to defeat a stubborn TP Mazembe 3-1 in a later fixture.

AS FAR now top Group A with six points, ahead of Mazembe and UWC who are level on three points each, while Medina are yet to collect any point or even score a goal.

The Congolese side had taken the lead in the 11th minute through Elena Nkuandum.

After the break, the AS FAR came back strongly and Doha El Madani levelled matters in the 50th minute.

Two minutes later Sanaa Mssoudy gave the Moroccans the lead for the first time in the match, before she returned for her brace in the 58th minute to all but seal victory.

TP Mazembe were awarded a penalty late in the match (83’) but Telma Baffour misfired to hand AS FAR a deserved victory.

Group A returns to action on Friday where the semi-finalists will be confirmed.

UWC will lock horns with AS FAR – while Medina takes on TP Mazembe.

Both fixtures will kick off at 7pm South African time.
