Earlier this month, the Hammers had agreed to a £30million transfer fee with United, offering Maguire an opportunity to rejuvenate his stalled Premier League career by moving to the London Stadium.
While both clubs eventually settled on terms after initial negotiations about payment structure, Maguire and United failed to come to an agreement regarding a severance package that would reflect the significant decrease in wages necessary to facilitate the move.
Despite the situation, it seems evident that Maguire's time at Old Trafford is coming to an end. Victor Lindelof has once again become the preferred choice, stepping in when Raphael Varane was substituted due to an injury concern during United's victorious 3-2 comeback against Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
This development has fueled hope for West Ham, suggesting that a potential deal for Maguire could still materialise before the transfer window closes.
The table-topping surprise performers might consider proposing a loan offer to United. They are aware that the 30-year-old may encounter difficulties in securing a permanent departure.
The willingness of United to entertain such an offer remains uncertain. Ten Hag has been forthright in evaluating Maguire's prospects for regular playing time, indicating that increased commitment could lead to more opportunities.
However, United might consider retaining their former captain, especially if Varane's injury concern proves significant.
