Spar Proteas claim two straight wins in the Vitality Nations Cup

Spar Proteas coach Jenny van Dyk says the players did well in handling key moments to upset England on home soil with a 61-59 win in the 2025 Vitality Nations Cup, at the Motorpoint Arena on Sunday evening.

The Proteas remain the only unbeaten side in the tournament following an impressive 75-40 victory over Uganda in the first round.

Speaking at the post match presser, Van Dyk adds that she is happy with the team’s consistency, however still believes in putting more work ahead of their match against Malawi.

"We fought it out to the end and even though they tried absolutely everything, the players kept the compulsion and they handled key moments really well and it got us to our first big win,” van Dyk said.

“So, I'm just so proud of the team and proud of the unity and the trust and the consistency that they have brought to this game, definitely a game we will remember forever but the work is not done.

“We have to still play Malawi and we have to still play in the finals, against whoever will be in the finals. To us, it's about making sure that we set up our players to succeed there as well, so the work is far from done."

South Africa and the hosts played to a tightly contested clash, with scores level by the end of the first three quarters, and Van Dyk says she’s impressed that her side did not fade till the last whistle and believes that’s the difference between this tournament and the Sunshine series against Jamaica.

"The performance they put up today during this match, that is South Africa for you and that is what we know we can do. The most important part of all of this is to repeat this performance and have consistency on the way we perform on the international arena,” she added.

“But definitely three solid quarters from us, staying in that match all the way. What was different this time around was that the second quarter we didn't fade away like we did in Jamaica."
