Africa World Cup qualifiers wrap: Impressive Mozambique move top of Group G

The race for World Cup qualification continued on Thursday with big wins for Mozambique, Gabon and Cape Verde.

An impressive Mozambique moved top of Group G with their 3-1 win over Uganda on Thursday.

Pepo opened the scoring for the Mambas at the Cairo International Stadium after just three minutes. Muhammad Shaban produced a shock equaliser just four minutes later, but a lively Pepo restored his side's lead on 16 minutes.

Uganda were then reduced to ten men when Denis Omedi saw red on 38 minutes, and Stanley Ratifo secured the win with his goal in stoppage time at the end of the first half.

Uganda ended the afternoon in fifth place on the six-team league with six points from five games, six adrift of Mozambique.

Benin threw away a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 away to Zimbabwe but still claimed top spot with eight points from five games.

Steve Mounie (12'), and Dodo Dokou (35') both scored in the first half, but the home team responded through goals from in-form attackers Marshall Munetsi (44') and Knowledge Musona (59').

Zimbabwe are bottom of the standings with three points.

Cape Verde, meanwhile, moved above Cameroon to the top of Group D with their 1-0 win over Mauritius

Yannick Semedo netted an 84th minute at Estadio Nacional de Cabo Verde to steer his side onto 10 points, and leaving their fellow islanders in fifth place with four points.

Gabon made strides in their World Cup qualification hopes with a 3-0 win over bottom-team Seychelles to move two points clear of Ivory Coast, although from one game more.

Jim Allevinah opened the scoring after three minutes and Denis Bouanga made sure of the result with his brace with goals in the 30th and 63rd minutes.

Elsewhere, Mali overcame Comoros 3-0 to move into fourth in Group I, one point clear of their opponent, as Kenya and Gambia drew 3-3 in Group F, and Namibia saw off Malawi 1-0 to move into second place in Group H.
