Bafana, who are two points clear at the top of the group standings, with five matches to go, face a Benin side in Abidjan, due to the hosts not having a suitable venue at home.
Tau, who’s nearing a half-century of caps, boasts plenty experience travelling and playing matches across the continent and advises how this game could be approached.
"It's important to try and analyse the games, which ones to win, which ones to play well and get the win, and which ones not to play well and get the win," said Tau.
"So it's also about the demands of the game – some are different, it demands us to fight, work hard, which you have not seen in the past with us, but now it's there.
"We're also trying to say, if the game is not allowing us to play our normal game, we'll try and do it in a different way because we also need the points sometimes.
"And ja, we'll play the good football and show how good we are, but sometimes we have to fight to get the results, and it's going to be the same in the next game.
"We know it's going to be difficult against Benin in Ivory Coast, it's our last game against them, but we also understand that Nigeria is coming up, so it's also important for us to try and separate as much as possible.
"But it's going to be a fight against Benin, and we'll also try and give them a fight, it's not going to be an easy one, but we'll fight to get the three points."
