Bafana Bafana guaranteed top-quality pitch for Polokwane World Cup Qualifier

Polokwane executive mayor Mosema Mpe has assured the pitch at Peter Mokaba Stadium will be ready for Bafana Bafana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifier against Lesotho next month.

Polokwane had long been touted to host the match on 21 March, but concerns over the pitch conditions in recent weeks raised doubts after it suffered damage during a music concert by Limpopo star Makhadzi in December.

So far this year, no football matches have been played at the venue, but Mpe remains confident that everything will be in order in time for the game.

"We'll be communicating with the PSL so that the first game, the stadium will be ready from 1 March, so the team has been working around the clock," said Mpe.

"You can even take photos or whatever, you can see the pitch is way different from what it was after that day the Premier and I were dancing here with Makhadzi.

"The issue of the finals, maybe let me clarify the price – it's R70 for adults, R40 for children under 12."

SABC Sport understands that only one PSL match will be played at Peter Mokaba Stadium before the qualifier, as Mpe acknowledges the venue has been overused and games will now be spread across other locations.

"What we can also say is that Seshego [Stadium] is ready, the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium is ready, and what we're going to do is have matches in all three stadiums," he added.

"That means we will not overload – for example, the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium is highly overloaded, that's why now Seshego brings some relief, but our intention is that we will have games being played there."
