Banyana Banyana to face Denmark in a friendly

SABC Sport can confirm that Banyana Banyana will face Denmark on Friday, 25 October 2024 in an international friendly match.

Full details of the match will be disclosed in the coming days.

This will be the first time the two nations meet.

The Europeans were also at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, drawn in Group D alongside England, China and Haiti.

The Danes were eliminated in the Round of 16 when they lost to Australia while South Africa went down to the Netherlands in the same knockout phase.

The clash against the 12th World Ranked Red and White, as the Danes are called, comes just four days before tackling England on Tuesday, 29 October at the Building Society Arena, the home of Coventry City in England.

The Lionesses, who are the reigning champions in the UEFA Women’s EUROs, are second in the world.

They have played South Africa twice before, winning both encounters.

Desiree Ellis’ charges will then close off the year with two fixtures against Jamaica, also known as the Reggae Girlz, away in the Caribbean Island.

The games against the 42nd world-ranked country have been pencilled in for 29 November 2024 and 2 December 2024.

The two nations last met in Durban in 2019 shortly before the 2019 FIFA Women’s Cup in France, and shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw.

All four matches are part of Banyana Banyana’s preparations to defend their CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title they won in 2022 in Morocco.

The tournament has been scheduled for June 2025 but the football controlling body on the continent is yet to announce the hosts.

In total, South Africa would have played nine matches by the end of 2024.

They kicked off the year with four Olympic Games qualifiers against Tanzania and Nigeria on a home and away-basis.

The African Champions then traveled to West Africa for a date with Senegal in two international friendlies.

With the final fixtures against coach Andrée Jeglertz’s Denmark, followed by England led by Sarina Wiegman and twice vs Jamaica.
