Banyana Banyana to pay tribute to Janine Van Wyk in her farewell match against DRC

Banyana Banyana head coach Desiree Ellis has expressed her heartfelt appreciation for long-serving captain, Janine Van Wyk.

Van Wyk is poised to retire from international football following the upcoming two-legged Olympic Games qualifiers against the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) scheduled for 25 and 31 October.

Ellis has shared her intention to arrange a remarkable farewell for Van Wyk, who has admirably represented her country.

Throughout her tenure as the leader of the national team, Ellis is determined to pay homage to all the legends and ensure they receive the recognition they deserve.

Speaking with SABC Sport, she emphasised that Van Wyk’s significant contribution to South African football will be forever etched in the annals of the sport.

"Janine has obviously said that she'd retire and I think under my tenor, it's the first player that's saying they are going to retire and having watched the USA giving fantastic sendoffs to two of their legends.

I only think it's right that we give her, her flowers. I think she's been tremendous for the national team. She's worn her heart on her sleeve. If there's someone that's really put everything into playing for the national team, it's Janine. I think she's loved playing for this national team.

Of course, but we have to make sure that we get the results first to be able to give her, her flowers. I think it's well deserved and we will do that for all our legends that retire in my tenor because that's all I can do," Ellis said.
