Banyana coach says Jamaica games could be the last chance to look at players ahead of WAFCON

Banyana Banyana head coach Desiree Ellis says the two international friendly matches against Jamaica could be the last chance for players to impress ahead of CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations next year.

Ellis was speaking after announcing her squad of 23 players to face the Reggae Girlz on 29 November and 2 December away. The South Africans have already faced Senegal twice, as well as Denmark and England in preparation for WAFCON.

This will be the last match of the year for the African champions and Ellis says this could be the final opportunity to try out players.

''There's not a lot of time as I said. We have give opportunities. Players that didn't get game time during Cosafa, might have to give it another look, because we want to make sure that we have all our basis covered. I have had that conversation with some of the players, just to have a look in terms of what they can offer. Look this is probably our last international friendly - where we have to assess the players and figure our core group for WAFCON. Now Bambanani is injured, what happens when are our regular players are injured, we need to get all of our basis covered,'' said Ellis.

After tough clashes against Denmark and England, Ellis says they are expecting another difficult day at the office against the 42nd ranked Reggae Girlz.

''They can play too, but also the physicality of the team - which is something we usually struggle with. We have to find solutions for that, and we have to use this last international friendly to make sure that we are better compared to the game we have played. It won't be easy at WAFCON because everyone will be chasing us,'' added Ellis.

Ellis was on Wednesday night inducted into the South African Hall of Fame alongside other football greats like Jomo Sono, Shakes Mashaba, Teenage Dladla, Neil Tovey, Lucas Radebe and the late Ace Ntsoelengoe. This achievement follows on other accolades like a doctorate from CPUT and being bestowed with the Order of Ikhamanga.

''I was very emotional, when I looked at the inductees who were - I learned a lot from them. I would like to thank Banyana players and the staff for their efforts. This one is not for me alone, this for all making who trying to make their names in football,''

Bafana Bafana are on everyone’s lips after their great performance in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers where they did not lose a match, Ellis says she has been impressed by the team and believes they can win the AFCON.
