Betway Premiership wrap: Cape Town City held to draw, Chippa hammer Magesi

Cape Town City and Golden Arrows could not be separated as the sides played to a 1-1 draw at the Athlone Stadium in the Betway Premiership on Wednesday night.

Both sides managed to avoid a third consecutive defeat in all competitions but it is Arrows who will be happier with the point in a match which City dominated for large periods.

The Mother City outfit are still in sixth with 21 points, while Arrrows with 20 points remain in eighth above KZN rivals AmaZulu by virtue of a superior goal difference.

The match began at a leisurely pace at Athlone Stadium, with both teams playing cautiously during the opening 10 minutes. However, it was Arrows who opened the scoring in the 15th minute when Bongani Cele finished confidently from close range after a clever move inside the City penalty area.

Abafana Bes'thende managed to just about guard their 1-0 lead all the way to the halftime whistle despite Muhsin Ertugral's charges often penning the Lamontville-based outfit back in their own half.

Ertugral's halftime talk seemed to inspire a strong response as City quickly equalized right after the break. Following a free-kick awarded just outside the box, Tshegofatso Nyama's expertly placed left-footed curl beat Ismail Watenga, who had no chance of stopping it.

With renewed energy, City dominated possession, controlling 74 percent of the ball after the hour mark, and put Arrows under constant pressure.

Despite their efforts, neither team managed to find a winner, and the match ended in a 1-1 draw at the final whistle.

Chippa United thrash Magesi after floodlight chaos

Chippa United secured a dominant 4-1 victory over Magesi FC in the Betway Premiership at Seshego Stadium, but only after floodlight failures forced the match to be postponed from Tuesday evening to Wednesday afternoon.

The match, initially set for a 7:30 PM kick-off on Tuesday, was disrupted by two floodlight failures - one 30 minutes into play and another 20 minutes before half-time - leading to its suspension.

When play resumed on Wednesday, Chippa wasted no time in asserting their dominance. Magesi had taken an early lead in the third minute through Vandala's right-footed strike, but Chippa responded swiftly as Mcedi Kwayiba equalised just two minutes later.

Craig Martin then put Chippa ahead in the 25th minute, followed by Suen Ndlovu's header from a corner in the 31st minute, giving the visitors a 3-1 advantage at the break.

Magesi struggled to create clear-cut chances in the second half despite making multiple substitutions before the hour mark.

Chippa sealed their commanding victory in the 66th minute when Kwayiba netted his second with a header. With Magesi unable to mount a comeback, Chippa confidently saw out the match, claiming a well-earned three points.

TS Galaxy and Polokwane City play out goalless draw

TS Galaxy and Polokwane City drew 0-0 in their Betway Premiership clash at Mbombela Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Both sides extended their impressive unbeaten runs, with TS Galaxy now 11 matches without defeat and Polokwane City stretching their streak to nine.

Despite the lack of goals, the match provided plenty of action. Polokwane City's Raymond Daniels set up Thato Letshedi for an early chance in the 9th minute, but he missed an open goal.

Letshedi tested TS Galaxy goalkeeper Tape Ira in the 17th minute, while Ayabonga Gwangqa's cross-shot rattled the woodwork in the 39th minute. Daniels was denied on the rebound by a solid defensive block.

TS Galaxy pushed forward, with Sphiwe Mahlangu twice denied at close range by Polokwane City goalkeeper Brian Okoth just before halftime.

The Rockets introduced Puso Dithejane after the break, and Victor Letsoalo struck the post in the 55th minute. In the 82nd minute, Polokwane City's Appollis was sent through on goal but was stopped by Ira.

Despite heavy attacking pressure from TS Galaxy in the final minutes, Polokwane City held firm to secure a valuable point.
