Breaking: Royal AM set for PSL expulsion

SABC Sport has established that the Premier Soccer League [PSL] hierarchy is now exploring possibilities to expel Royal AM.

According to the NSL handbook, the league can also impose sanctions that lead to suspension and relegation under extreme circumstances.

It’s understood the Executive Committee have been locked in meetings discussing the matter at length and have all but made the call to enforce rule 57.13, which would effectively mean the 2024/25 Betway Premiership season will then have to continue with only 15 instead of 16 clubs.

This follows weeks of attempting to deal with the saga surrounding the franchise owned by flamboyant businesswoman Shauwn Mkhize after the South African Revenue Services [SARS] appointed a curator to run the team.

Royal AM have had their topflight matches postponed indefinitely after the PSL felt it was not provided sufficient guarantees despite asking for “a letter of comfort” regarding the running of the club and upcoming fixtures.

Thwihli Thwahla have not managed to host or travel to a game since 29 December last year, a 3-0 defeat to TS Galaxy at the Harry Gwala Stadium.

To their credit, Royal AM have been at loggerheads with SARS, who are determined to collect at R40-million tax debt linked to Mkhize, over payment of salaries to players and staff since late last year.

As reported by SABC Sport a week ago, the club failed after their latest attempt in court with an urgent application to force the PSL and SARS to allow them to return to play was dismissed.

Royal AM are now rooted to the foot of the table with just 11 games played, one win, five draws and five defeats leaving them with eight points.

They were also scheduled to play Milford FC in the Nedbank Cup round of 32, but that fixture was also postponed.

An announcement from the PSL regarding the expulsion is expected before the end of the week with sponsors and fans waiting to hear the way forward.
