Both teams would be reasonably content with the outcome, particularly following the 10th-placed Golden Arrows and the 11th-placed Chippa United also settling for a 1-1 draw in their league fixture at the Mpumalanga Stadium in Hammarsdale.
The fifth-placed Galaxy, who are five points ahead of the eighth-placed Polokwane City, rallied to earn a point in Cape Town after a scrappy affair, resembling a typical end-of-season encounter.
The seventh-placed Cape Town City, trailing Galaxy by just a point, broke the deadlock shortly before halftime when Darwin Gonzalez concluded a swift counter-attack.
The Venezuelan winger gained possession in his own half after a Galaxy offensive move fizzled out and found himself in a two-on-one scenario. He then seized his opportunity superbly as the Galaxy defender retreated, affording Gonzalez the chance to calmly slot the ball past the goalkeeper.
Galaxy restored parity four minutes into the second half when they were granted a penalty, which appeared somewhat dubious. Nonetheless, Sphiwe Mahlangu stepped up and expertly deceived Cape Town City goalkeeper Darren Keet, leveling the scoreline.
At the Mpumalanga Stadium, Brooklyn Poggenpoel handed Chippa United the lead in the 23rd minute against Golden Arrows.
However, Arrows secured a crucial point in the top-eight battle when Kagiso Malinga netted the equalizer in the 72nd minute.
