Evidence Makgopa gave the South Africans the lead shortly before the hour-mark, which looked to be enough until Morocco were awarded an 85th-minute penalty. But Achraf Hakimi blazed his shot over the bar, allowing Teboho Mokoena to fire a powerful free-kick into the goal to give Bafana a 2-0 victory and silence the crowd of mostly Moroccan fans.
Morocco had the rub of the green in the first half, creating more scoring opportunities and enjoying greater possession. However, they couldn't capitalize on their opportunities, and the teams went into the break level.
Bafana grew into the match, however, and in the 57th minute, a beautiful pass from Themba Zwane at the end of a flowing move allowed Makgopa to fire Hugo Broos' side into the lead.
That goal looked like it was going to be enough for Bafana, who showed plenty of resilience in defence, but with five minutes of regulation time to play, Mothobi Mvala was penalized for a handball after a VAR check, giving Morocco a golden chance to get back in the match.
Unfortunately, Hakimi's shot scuffed the crossbar and flew over as a golden opportunity went begging.
To make matters worse for Morocco, Sofyan Amrabat of Manchester United received a red card for a foul on Maseko shortly after.
That handed Mokoena a free-kick on the edge of the box in injury time, and the Sundowns star did not disappoint, striking a powerful shot into the back of the net to put the result beyond question.
Bafana Bafana now move on to the last eight where they will face Cape Verde in the quarterfinals in Yamoussoukro.
