Gavin Hunt offered to Sekhukhune United, but no deal

South Africa’s four-time league title winning coach Gavin Hunt is understood to have been offered to join Sekhukhune United.

According to information gathered by SABC Sport, the 59-year-old mentor is opting to instead continue discussions with his current employers SuperSport United around a new deal with his initial contract expiring on 30 June after Babina Noko did not revert back.

Sekhukhune are said to be intensifying their search for someone to take over from Lehlohonolo Seema, who was placed on special leave last month following an alleged fall-out with the club’s hierarchy towards the end of the season.

Babina Noko have also been linked with Golden Arrows coach Steve Komphela as well as his Stellenbosch FC counterpart Steve Barker.

The public broadcaster has been led to believe Sekhukhune moved swiftly to table an offer for Hunt to join them with Matsatsantsa yet to make any announcements around the coach’s future with less than two weeks before his contract ends.

It’s no surprise that the veteran mentor was being considered having proved to have pedigree and longevity by winning three titles in his first stint with SuperSport between 2008 and 2010, then again with Bidvest Wits in 2017.

Perhaps the only blemish in his CV is his stint at Kaizer Chiefs, which lasted eight months after he was appointed on a three-year contract in September 2020.

Hunt then subsequently moved to Chippa United, where trigger happy chairman Siviwe Mpengesi didn’t waste time letting the coach go after 10 matches.

SABC Sport understands talks between Hunt and the Tshwane side have begun, but are currently someway off in agreeing terms – hence the Sekhukhune job might have been tempting, although Hunt has decided to turn it down.
