The Brazilians are already eight points clear of third place Matsatsantsa after six matches, although SuperSport have a game in hand.
Lakay believes they will need to be more ruthless to keep up.
"It all comes down to mentality you know. I learnt that at Sundowns, games like that you have to kill and obviously when you play the so called 'bigger teams'. Also, when you play against teams, not that you are disrespecting Arrows or whatever but when you play Chiefs [Kaizer] and your Pirates [Orlando], your big teams, you don't need motivation," Lakay said.
Having joined SuperSport last month from Sundowns, the experienced Lakay knows all about winning titles. The 32-year-old warns his teammates about being complacent in fixtures where they are favourites on paper.
"These games at the bottom, some players they switch off because there's no automatic motivation where you say 'Okay, we are playing against a big team I don't need the coaches to try and motivate me because obviously you know automatically it's a big game, I have to perform'. These are the games where you have to motivate yourself," he added.
The Tshwane outfit have a CAF Confederation Cup commitment this weekend away to Botswana’s Gaborone United before returning to DStv Premiership action against Kaizer Chiefs on 20 September.
Lakay is wary of Downs stretching their lead further.
"With us and Sundowns or the rest of the PSL and also me coming from there, I know how it is and once they start opening the gap it's gonna be difficult to catch them. So, ya like I said we just have to rectify that and also, we have to have that mentality of saying 'Look games like this, we have to kill'.
