Hugo Broos on the lookout for more younger defenders for Bafana Bafana

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos is on a mission to find more younger defenders, particularly centre-backs.

With Kaizer Chiefs left-footed centre-back Rushwin Dortley (22) set to be sidelined for the next few months after he underwent knee surgery last week, Broos has some tough decisions to make in the next two Bafana Bafana FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Benin this week.

Broos says that with an aging defence, he’s forced to cast his net wide for younger defenders and plan for the future.

"I think there are enough centre-backs but you see now they are injured or don't have a passport so I'm not really afraid of finding centre-backs but the only thing is, I said it Thursday also, we need to find younger players because little by little our team is gonna start becoming old,” Broos said.

“When you see the defenders, we only have players of 29, 30 and older. So, that means little by little we have to start getting some younger players in our team."

But Broos is not scratching his head for this camp with Grant Kekana, Nkosinathi Sibisi, Siyabonga Ngezana, and Thabo Moloisane in the team.

He’s confident that South Africa does not lack talent in this department.

"Therefore, those two guys here and also Ndamane is also somebody younger in the central defence but yeah, when you don't have a passport, I can't call you up. We are strong enough with the defenders that we have, so for me, it's not a problem for the moment," he added.

Meanwhile, much has been said about the omission of young TS Galaxy defender Khulumani Ndamane (21), who didn’t have a passport when the final 23-man squad was announced.

Galaxy President Tim Sukazi confirmed to SABC Sport last Friday that the player would have his passport ready by this past Monday.

But Broos says this would’ve been late already for their travelling plans.
