Kwesi Appiah eyes Sudan's AFCON glory with renewed optimism

Sudan's national team coach, Kwesi Appiah, has expressed his determination to lead the Falcons of Jediane to a competitive and prideful showing at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The former Ghana coach secured Sudan's place in the tournament by guiding them to a second-place finish in Group F, amassing eight points.

Despite challenging circumstances, including playing home matches on neutral grounds due to the ongoing civil war, Sudan managed two wins, two draws, and two defeats in the qualifiers.

Appiah emphasised the team's commitment to making a strong impression on the continental stage.

"For me, once we have been able to qualify, there is nothing we cannot do. I believe, with the help of God, we will perform well to honour the country and avoid any embarrassment," Appiah said in an interview with Asempa FM.

Sudan's AFCON history is highlighted by their 1970 triumph when they hosted the tournament. However, since then, success has been elusive, with only one advancement beyond the group stage and qualification for just three of the last 24 editions.

As the countdown begins to the next AFCON, set to be hosted by Morocco from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026, Appiah aims to inspire his team to defy expectations. Their focus remains on restoring national pride and building on the momentum of their hard-fought qualification.

Sudan's journey to AFCON 2025 may be challenging, but under Appiah's leadership, the Falcons of Jediane are eager to make their mark once again on Africa's biggest football stage.
