Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies close off the 2024 league season with a win over UWC

Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies forward, Andisiwe Mgcoyi says it was important for their side to close off the season with a win.

The Brazilians defeated bitter rivals University of the Western Cape (UWC) 2-0 in the final match of the 2024 Hollywoodbets Super League season.

The clash took place at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville on Sunday.

Mgcoyi scored the opening goal, with Lehlogonolo Mashigo grabbing the second.

After a long season, Sundowns Ladies were awarded their league trophy – their fifth in a row.

No other team has won the title since the start of the elite women’s football league in South Africa.

"It's really nice to have won and celebrate this cup because it was not gonna be nice if we played a draw or lost then have to celebrate. We fought for each other on and off the field, we pushed each other even though it wasn't easy because it's been a long year especially for us, from January until December, fatigue is there but we tried," Mgcoyi said.

Mgcoyi, however, says that it wasn’t easy, and they had to work hard for the title, which they secured with just one match to spare. They won 27 out of 30 matches, drawing two and losing one.

"This season wasn't easy when you look at our results in our games, it was always 1-0, 1-0, 1-0 but we pushed through because when you are playing for this badge you have to fight for everything. I'm very excited that we won today."
