The Chilli Boys suffered their fourth league defeat since the resumption of the 2022/23 season following the FIFA World Cup break in December, and Mammila has only managed to pick up six points in eight games.
Attempts to get Mammila to confirm his departure from the Gqeberha outfit were unsuccessful as his phone rang unanswered, however it is understood the veteran administrator turned coach was on his way to Limpopo.
Mammila took over from Daine Klate in September last year and promised expansive football to the Chippa fans – and initially the changes enforced by chairman Siviwe ‘Chippa’ Mpengesi seem to do the trick.
Under his guidance, the Chilli Boys won their next four matches against AmaZulu, Marumo Gallants, Kaizer Chiefs and Sekhukhune United and Mammila proudly boasted about having a better record than coaches with higher qualifications.
According to sources, Chippa have now brought back Kurt Lentjies and he is the one then expected to be in charge for the remainder of the season to try get the club out of the relegation dogfight.
Lentjies, who helped Chippa avoid the drop last season, initially left the club when Klate was appointed, but Mammila brought him back in January.
Following the 2-1 loss to Swallows on Sunday afternoon, the Chilli Boys are now tied with the Dube Birds on 24 points – just three above the relegation play-off spot with nine league matches to go.
