UWC Ladies one win away from Women's Champions League finals

The University of Western Cape Ladies have put themselves in a strong position to join rivals Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies in the CAF Women's Champions League final tournament.

This after the Cape outfit cruised to a commanding 6-0 win over Young Buffaloes of Eswatini in the CAFWCL COSAFA Qualifiers semi-final in Blantyre, Malawi on Thursday afternoon.

Goals from Khanyisa Manengela, Bongeka Gamede, Ntombifikile Ndlovu, Tiffany Kortjie, Koketso Mamabolo, and Sibulele Holweni ensured UWC cruised into the regional final.

UWC were in front as early as the 10th minute, when Manengela slotted home from the penalty spot, before Gamede doubled their lead midway through the first half.

The floodgates opened in the second half, as Buffaloes were left in sixes and sevens to defend an onslaught on their own goal, as Ndlovu, Kortjie, Mamabolo and Holweni – also from the 12 yards out – added flattery to the scoreline.

They will now face Botswana's Gaborone United for the Southern African crown as well as a place in the continental finals later this year.

The Gaborone outfit had overcome Zimbabwe's Herentals Queens 1-0 in the earlier semi-final, and will meet the students from South Africa for the first time ever.

Coach Thinasonke Mbuli will be hoping to guide her charges one step further to join their Hollywoodbets Super League counterparts, who are the reigning African champions, on the big stage.

The COSAFA Qualifiers final is scheduled to take place at Mpria Stadium in Blantyre on Saturday, 24 August 2024, with kick-off set for 14:00.
