SABC Sport has established that, despite Wayde Jooste arriving in KwaZulu-Natal earlier this week and being added to Maritzburg's training squad, the utility player hasn’t yet put pen to paper to make things official.
Jooste worked closely with Davids for two years at Pirates before they both left the Soweto giants in July to begin new chapters elsewhere – the player being allowed to keep fit with SuperSport United, while the coach spent a brief stint in Russia.
Davids recently returned from a spell with Russian Premier League side Lokomotiv Moscow after he was roped in to join Josef Zinnbauer’s technical team, a move that only lasted a few weeks before the entire backroom staff was sacked.
He was appointed Maritzburg coach this week and immediately told Sports Night Amplified with Andile Ncube that he would soon make a call on which players would stay and go in his attempts to lift the Team of Choice from the bottom of the DStv Premiership table.
Jooste could very well be one of his first signings at the club, but the coach has enough time to assess and make up his mind because, not only is the player currently a free agent, the Premier Soccer League is also on a seven-week recess.
Maritzburg face TS Galaxy at the Harry Gwala Stadium on 30 December in what will be Davids’ homecoming fixture.
