The Argentine midfielder is expected to join the Brazilians next season after the two clubs concluded his transfer on a four-year deal following fruitful talks that began several weeks ago.
Stellies were eager to hold on to their best players as this was coach Steve Barker’s wish to keep the core of the squad that helped the side from the Winelands to finish sixth in the DStv Premiership during the 2022/23 campaign.
But with Downs losing midfielder Haashim Domingo on a free transfer having failed to agree personal terms with the ex-junior international, the Brazilians quickly switched their focus to luring Mendieta to Chloorkop.
Mendieta was arguably one of the best midfielders in the league with 10 goals and nine assists from 31 games in all competitions for Stellies – the kind of numbers that led to questions why he was not nominated for any of the individual accolades in the Premier Soccer League awards categories.
But validation has come his way with an offer to join Sundowns and challenge for titles next season under coach Rulani Mokwena.
There was reported interest from Kaizer Chiefs in the 30-year-old, but SABC Sport can confirm rivals Downs have won the race for his signature.
Sundowns are expected to assemble for pre-season on 29 June and it is likely the club will announce Mendieta’s arrival before then, as well as news of Mokwena’s contract as the sole head coach.
The public broadcaster reported earlier today the tactician had been offered a four-year deal, which he is expected to sign before the new season kicks off in August.
