Achraf Hakimi apologises for penalty miss

Achraf Hakimi has apologised for missing a crucial penalty in Morocco's Africa Cup of Nations last 16 clash with South Africa.

With Bafana Bafana leading one-nil with a goal from Evidence Makgopa on 57 mintes, Hakimi had a chance to level the score from the spot.

The Paris Saint-Germain winger stepped up but fired his shot onto the crossbar and over the target.

Teboho Mokoena then made it 2-0 with his goal on 95 minutes to secure Bafana's place in the quarter-finals and saw Morocco eliminated.

Following the game, Hakimi posted on social media: "Today is a very difficult and sad day for our elimination.

"Apologies for the penalty, I took the responsibility of helping the team, but unfortunately it didn't work.

"I want to thank all the Moroccan people for their support, especially all the people who came to Ivory Coast. We will rise and come back stronger from now on! God willing."

Hakimi added a message of support to Bafana, saying: "Morocco is always! And good luck to the South African national team for the rest of the competition."
