Ballon d'Or nominee rallying home crowd behind Bafana Bafana

Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams is looking forward to playing only his second game for the national team in front of his home crowd in Gqeberha tomorrow when they host Congo in an Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier.

The two teams will lock horns in a Group K encounter at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium at 19:00.

The Mamelodi Sundowns number one goalkeeper has not played in Gqeberha with Bafana since the international friendly match against Mali in 2019.

Speaking on Umhlobo Wenene’s BEE Breakfast Show with Mluleki Ntsabo on Wednesday, Williams relishes leading the team in front of his home crowd.

"Yeah, amazing feeling, it's always good to be home. This is where everything started for me, once I had a dream a few years ago and I've lived my dream. So, I'm just glad that I'm leading the team now in front of my family, my friends, people that's been on the journey with me so I'm just excited for the game," Williams said.

Williams hails from Gelvandale township, in the Northern areas of Gqeberha.

The last time Bafana Bafana were in the same group as Congo was back in 2014 during the 2015 AFCON qualifiers.

The late Senzo Meyiwa played a pivotal role in helping Shakes Mashaba’s team get four points out of six against the Central African side. Williams echoes head coach Hugo Broos’s words of going for six out of six.

"Yes, we do, we've got a good analyst department, run by Sinesipho Mali so he's done a good job of putting clips together to give us an idea as to how they play. I mean football is worldwide now and it's just a click of the button to get any video footage of teams so we're privileged now,” he added.

“We've seen them, we've studied them and we've analysed them as well so it's gonna be tough, we are looking forward to it but yes, the outcome for this camp is six out of six and we believe it's possible."
