City are still hopeful of gaining promotion from the Motsepe Foundation Championship to the DStv Premiership by at least grabbing one of the two spots for the play-offs and going all the way.
The Northern Cape-based outfit are currently in ninth position on the log table with six matches to go, but only four points adrift of being in the top three.
Truter has the pedigree of guiding a side from the lower division to the topflight just as he did with Swallows in 2020.
According to information gathered by the public broadcaster, the veteran coach was spotted landing in Upington this morning ahead of crunch talks with the club to discuss potentially coming on board.
Upington are currently led Thulani Nkosi, but the management are eyeing a mentor with slightly more experience to try get them over the line or build towards next season for promotion.
SABC Sport has learnt Truter is being earmarked for the role hence the decision to arrange a meeting this weekend with him also likely to stay and watch Upington host Black Leopards on Saturday afternoon.
Truter’s last job was at Sekhukhune, but he parted company with Babina Noko in November after 40 matches in charge.
He was replaced by Lehlohonolo Seema.
Should he be appointed with a handful of fixtures remaining, his immediate task would be to try galvanise the team for the final stretch although Magesi and University of Pretoria are considered to be in a two-horse race for the automatic promotion to the topflight.
The play-offs at the end of the season would then involve the Premiership side finishing second from bottom as well as the runners-up plus the third placed team in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
