This was confirmed by United head coach Morgan Mammila during a media briefing on Wednesday, when Vilakazi was introduced after he started working with the club during the recent international break.
The former Golden Arrows co-coach shocked the local football community when he vacated his co-coaching role in KwaZulu-Natal and then joining United a few days later, and Mammila says he has given Vilakazi an opportunity to sit on the bench.
"This man is wearing a lot of caps, you're going to see him on the bench – he's my assistant on the bench. One thing for sure, I'm one person who works with people who want to give it their all," said Mammila.
"I'm giving him authority to give me everything that he has when it comes to football. I'm not limiting him, and I'm not starting this thing now, I'm even allowing him to be in charge of training the team.
"That's me. If there's any person who has expertise in something that I don't have, bring it on. All other teams you see that are successful, it's because people are giving it their all.
"And I want to make all my staff, when they wake up, look forward to coming to add value into this team. I'm not a one-man show, that's one thing for sure.
"So, you are going to see him, he has to sit down and come in and stand up and give instructions, that's me."
