Ghana's 2025 AFCON hopes hang on Angola clash

Ghana's Black Stars are faced with a critical test as they prepare for a decisive 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Angola today.

Head coach Otto Addo has urged his team to secure victory to revive their dwindling hopes of reaching the 2025 tournament.

The four-time African champions have endured a challenging qualification campaign, risking their first AFCON absence in two decades. A rocky start saw the Black Stars fall 1-0 to Niger in their opener at the Baba Yara Stadium, followed by a 1-1 draw with Niger.

Their fortunes didn't improve against Sudan, as they played out a goalless draw in Accra before losing 2-0 in the return leg.

These disappointing results leave Ghana fourth in Group F with just two points, trailing behind Niger, Sudan, and Angola.

However, Niger's emphatic 4-0 win over Sudan on Thursday provided a lifeline. For Ghana to qualify, they must defeat both Angola and Niger while hoping Sudan falter against Angola.

Speaking ahead of the Angola match, Otto Addo expressed confidence in his squad's mental preparedness.

"Mentally, the boys are ready," the 45-year-old said in an interview with the Ghana FA. "I'm looking forward to that game. It's time for our first victory in this competition."

Addo, formerly a talent coach at Borussia Dortmund, highlighted the significance of the match: "I think it's a great opportunity to keep the chance alive."

The must-win fixture was scheduled to kick off at 19:00 GMT, with Ghana needing nothing short of a victory to remain in contention. Fans and players alike braced for a pivotal night in the team's AFCON journey.
