Hugo Broos puzzled by Khulumani Ndamane passport saga

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has confirmed taking the decision to withdraw defender Khulumani Ndamane from his 23-man squad ahead of two FIFA World Cup qualifiers because he doesn’t have a passport.

The TS Galaxy centreback would have been a national team debutant having impressed Broos in his first season in the topflight and as such earning a call-up for the games against Lesotho and Benin this month.

However, the more experienced Grant Kekana has had to come in as a replacement due to Ndamane not having the documents to travel.

A bemused looking Broos says this is a missed opportunity.

"It's amazing that if you make a preliminary list that there are still players who don't have a passport, that happened with Ndamane. So, we talked and we had the intention to take him with the final squad but yeah, suddenly we received a message that he doesn't have a passport,” Broos said.

“When you see that he'd only have the passport next week and then you still have to go for a visa, it's not done. Players have to learn also that once they are in the preliminary squad, the first thing they have to look [for] is, do I have a passport because if the coach calls me, I have to be ready.

“So, this guy is missing a call-up for the national team because of his passport. I think in the future we have to make a list of 40 players or maybe 45 players and send them to the clubs and tell the players who are future Bafana Bafana players that first of all they need to do their passports so that we don't have such ridiculous problems anymore."

Broos believes the player and his club TS Galaxy have to take responsibility.

"On the start you blame nobody but if you know that you're in the preliminary squad of a national team, the first you have to think about, ow, do I have a passport because they know that you don't only play in South Africa, you have to go also to Benin now, to Ivory Coast so you need a visa,” the coach added.

“I blame the player a little bit also that he's not alert enough to know, ow my passport."
