South Africa learn CHAN, U17 AFCON, U20 AFCON fate

South Africa have learnt their fate at the draws for the upcoming African Nations Champions, U17 Africa Cup of Nations, and U20 Africa Cup Nations held in Cairo on Thursday.

Bafana Bafana will be in action with a locally-based side in the second stage qualifiers for the CHAN set to be held in Kenya, Tanzani, and Uganda from 2-30 August.

This comes after Tunisia and Libya withdrew from the final tournament, prompting CAF to move the event from February to August in order to host additional qualifiers with Algeria, Comoros, Egypt, Gabon, The Gambia, Malawi, and South Africa.

Bafana, who are set to be led by assistant coach Helman Mkhelele, will have to overcome Egypt in the initial round, which will be played over two legs, with the winner then having to battle either Malawi or Comoros in the second round to determine who qualifies for the tournament.

Elsewhere, the national men's under-17 side have been handed a lifeline after CAF increased the number of participating teams for the U17 AFCON from 12 to 16, allowing them to qualify by virtue of having ended third at last year's COSAFA U17 Championships on home soil.

Amajimbos have been drawn in Group B, where they will come up against Burkina Faso, a still-to-be-determined UNIFFAC qualifier, and Egypt at the showpiece in Morocco, which is scheduled for 30 March - 19 April.

The top 10-ranked teams at the tournament will qualify for the expanded FIFA U17 World Cup, which will have 48 teams participating in Qatar from 5-27 November.

Finally, the SA U20 Men's team have been handed a tough draw in the U20 AFCON, where they have been pitted against Nigeria, Egypt, and Morocco in Group B.

The tournament is scheduled to take place in Ivory Coast from 26 April - 18 May, with Amajita having to reach the semi-finals if they are to advance to the FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile from 27 September - 19 October.
